Week 8 -Games - Hoops! & Save the Village!

Updated: Dec 5, 2019

Hoops!

This week we came up with the idea to create a basketball game which will engage the kids as well as be a great way for them to breathe correctly.

Basketball game is liked by all and is fun to play. By playing this game the kids will be conditioned to make their exhalations longer, resulting in slower, deeper, and more efficient breathing. This is especially recommended for people with breathing-related (cystic fibrosis, asthma, emphysema, COPD) disorders.

The kids play the basketball game through the process of breathing. The kid inhales to get the basketball towards them. When they hold their breath, the ball starts to dribble. The kid then exhales to basket the ball in the basket.

We plan to design the game in such a way that for each level the kid has to inhale and exhale for the minimum required time for the ball to come closer to them as well as for the correct basket of the ball. This makes sure that the kid breaths for the required amount of time to basket the ball.

For the initial POC, we decided to use the input from the Oculus Go controller as the inhalation and exhalation events.

We tried creating a scene with only a basketball hoop pole and basketballs. Figuring out the kinematics to simulate the ball move in a parabolic motion and go inside the hoop was another challenge.

Next week we will integrate the game with the spirometer.

Save the Village!

Description

Save the Village is a Virtual-Reality game designed for children having a condition called Cystic Fibrosis. It is designed to alleviate the problem by gamifying the breathing process, such that children do their breathing exercises while enjoying the game in an immersive environment. In this game, there is a dragon flying above the village, trying to burn it, and the child has to save it.

Game Flow

Before starting the game, a player can choose the duration of inhalation and exhalation as well as the number of breathing cycles to be finished to play the game.During Inhalation, the water from the pond is sucked in. The duration of the inhalation should be at least the duration selected at the beginning of the game.During Exhalation, the water is sprayed towards the tent which is on fire. The duration of the exhalation should be at least the duration selected at the beginning of the game.If the player is unable to complete either the inhalation or the exhalation process, that breathing cycle is considered as incomplete and the player has to restart the game
